Poor mental health is extremely prevalent in today’s society. It is something that is being talked about more and more, as people understand that the stigma attached to mental health issues is not fair and only worsens the situation.This course is about looking at ways to help others (and yourself) in the event of a mental health crisis; whether it is depression, anxiety or panic attacks, or suicidal thoughts and feelings. Much is made, and rightly so, of our need to be able to monitor and look after our own mental health. Many of the courses we offer are a way to improve and grow as a person and understand the mental health issues that may be holding you back from achieving everything you deserve in life. But it is also important to understand how to help others who may be going through periods of poor mental health. The prevalence and importance of general first aid is well noted. This course shows you that mental health first aid is just as important as general first aid in helping those around you. If you haven’t experienced mental health problems before it may seem a daunting prospect to help someone who is going through a mental health crisis. This course is designed to give you the tools to understand how to help someone in this situation by exploring the effects on the person going through it.
From previous attendees to the course we have heard that the advice given can help in a situation when someone may need your help; a suicidal person was helped to evaluate life and reconsider their choices, someone with severe depression was helped to find the path to recovery, people have noted they are much more willing to help someone who appears distressed, but also to ask people who may be a little bit ‘out of sorts’. Starting that conversation can be very powerful…..In addition to learning the skills to help others, many of our attendees have found their own mental health has improved and they have the necessary skills to monitor themselves and reach out for help when needed.
